Day 33: Fisterra to Muxia

Camino de Santiago

30.8km (925.1km)
Thursday 28th April

The last day and very mixed feelings for me; yes glad in a way to be able to pack away the walking poles and hang up the rucksack for while but also a sense that this has been so incredible that in a way I’d like to just keep on walking. We wanted a chance to explore Muxia and have a good last supper so we left our “luxurious” accommodation in Fisterra early – the hotel patrons had left us plenty of breakfast supplies so after a quick bite to eat we left, rucksacks on for the last time :(. We walked through forests, always aware now that sea is close by and whenever we came out of the forests we felt we could almost walk continuously on the sand to Muxia; a ‘romantic’ idea if not a sensible one. There were hardly any other pilgrims en route but we did meet up with a couple of young girls (Alice and Grace who we had met on the very first night in Roncesvalles and who we didn’t then see until Santiago). We bumped into a few others going the reverse route also; having gone first to Muxia and now heading to Fisterra. We were warned that we might get our feet wet today as some of the rivers were quite deep but the good weather of late ensured, for once, that we were able to negotiate the ‘rivers’ with feet intact :). As we approached Muxia the sea was in view, the empty white sands looking inviting but we kept to the tarmac road all the way into Muxia. We had booked a hostel just as one entered the town but on viewing it decided to try for somewhere a little more luxurious for the final night. After setting Dan down in a bar  I scouted around and eventually decided on a lovely wee hotel in the town centre, Hotel Ade Lolo. We met up with a few straggling pilgrims, some of whom I’d seen off and on for the last 30 odd days but had not actually talked to. A lovely dinner, then we bid farewell knowing that I’ll probably bump into them on another Camino some time in the future, its definitely that kind of experience! The last thing we did was walk to Saint Mary Iglesia de Santa Maria – a church standing on the rocks looking out to sea, impressive.
