Day 2: Roncesvalles to Akerreta

Camino de Santiago

30km (57km)
Sunday 27th March

Early start (in the dark, thanks to clock change) after a sleepless night for Dan, who slept beside a big league snorer (it wasn’t me I hasten to add,  I was on the bunk below). Camino is all about love and calm and finding ones inner peace so it was quite amusing to see Dan eyeing the poor unsuspecting snorer with murder on his mind…We set off at sunset with a spring in our step, if a little hungry after a meagre breakfast of a piece of bread and coffee. This was all too quickly replaced with a feeling of lethargy, old age and pain emanating from many body parts – blisters on every toe, sore shoulders, hips…the pain stakes were high and its only day 2! It’s all in the mind I keep telling myself…

The weather today was once again great and we met a lot more people along the way, although mostly passing us as I stopped to deal with some ongoing ailment. I had planned to stop at a place called Larrasoana but some internet research implied that food was hard to come by there and it was rather unpleasant…on this stretch Dan was carrying some extra kilos of tins of tuna, fruit, biscuits & cake just in case there was a problem…no one else who we met seemed to be aware of the ongoing food shortage at Larrasoana and as it turned it out it was competely unfounded (I read it my useless guide book which may not make it to Santiago de Compostela) , but it did mean that I booked a lovely hotel a few kilometres further along the path, which turned out to be a great end to a good day; perfect hotel in a beautiful setting.
