Day 34: The end

Camino de Santiago

Friday 29th April

This morning we had a quick walk around Muxia, had a coffee in the harbour and then took the bus…this almost felt like cheating, after all surely we could just walk back to Santiago?

We arrived back in Santiago, dropped our bags in the beautiful San Francisco Hotel Monumento and then set out for a final, final last supper. I kept expecting to bump into fellow pilgrims but the throngs of tourists ensured that this didn’t happen. We turned in for the night, and already  I was starting to hatch a plan for another Camino; the only question being: which one? There are 14 (who knew!).

Saturday 30th April 2016

Early plane, and no we didn’t walk to the airport (most likely because I’d probably have become lost on the way). I bid farewell to Dan, who was going back to work in The Hague and headed to my plane. I was sitting on the plane (in seat 2C, as always!) wishing I’d at least bumped into a lovely Australian woman, René (who I’d met briefly early on on the Camino but who’d stayed an extra day in Burgos so I was then out of step with) and thinking about all the great characters I’d met when she got on the same plane! Fate! We went for a quick coffee, talked and talked about the trip, the people, etc and then bid our farewells(at least now Facebook friends :)). I took the train into London and spent the final day (still with a rucksack on my back) wandering around Regent’s Park with Brogan, Frank and Xander…all in all I still managed 30,000 steps on my Fitbit (not that I’m addicted!).

So it’s over, for 2016 at least, and it has been an amazing experience and one that I could whole heartedly recommend for anyone who wants to be a wee bit adventurous in a very safe and easy environment…just keep putting one foot (probably wet foot!) in front of the other, switch off for a month and you’ll wake up a different person.

Here’s to Camino Norte in June 2017…
