Day 3: Borrowdale to Patterdale

Coast to Coast

Saturday April 1st – 26.7 km (77.4km)

A bleary eyed start to the day as Dan has a lurgy which kept him coughing most of the night, I was very understanding and said no need to apologise for keeping me awake all night 😇. Dans blog today: Epic day … set off in the rain (no surprises there then) and headed for Greenup Edge. Not the nicest of climbs and no reward at the summit, it is one big bog! The rain and the amount of water everywhere made it slow going to Grasmere which we reached at 2:30; 6 hours down and only half way for the day! Thoughts of taxis were forgotten as we climbed to Grisedale Tarn en route to Patterdale.
My addition: We staggered into Patterdale nearly eleven hours after leaving the youth hostel this morning (my fault, as I had great difficulty walking on the slippery stones and through the the paths that had become streams :() and headed straight to the pub to ease the pain in our feet. We decided to eat there too; Dan’s fish and chips looked like they had seen better days but after raising concerns regarding the freshness of the fish it was eaten anyway! We then continued on to our lovely little B&B; Crookey Cottage, a mere 100m from the main road so we were told…well we’re here now and I’ve been putting forward my case for a day off tomorrow…Although it was a tough day we actually got out of our waterproofs for the first time since the start of the walk and were actually walking in t-shirts 🙂

Sounds wonderful and reminds me of route marches during National Service days those years ago. I landed up in hospital with pneumonia and thought I had landed in heaven. Keep the commentary going.
