Day 18: Byrness to Windy Gyle

Pennine Way

24.6 km (441.72 km) – Thursday 21st July.

Today got off to a good start because we are staying a second night at the same place so we only needed to carry waterproofs and water, I was almost skipping along with my new found weight loss. We walked through The Cheviots today and the scenery was vast, if not altogether awesome. There were hills as far as the eye could see in every direction; the country totally unspoilt due to the fact that the MOD own all the surrounding land so there is no development. I hadn’t appreciated how undeveloped this whole area is. The day was easy, the weather great and so we ended our penultimate day actually thinking we could have continued for another 24km to Kirk Yetholm…we were picked up by the Joyce, from Forest View, and taken back to the same accommodation as last night for a second night’s stay. I bumped into Andrew, who is doing Lands End to John O’Groats, who I had met on a few previous occasions – it turns out we both grew up in Kilmalcolm, it s a small world! There was also a family with a ten year old son, Sam, who were about to finish the Pennine Way in 16 days. Last night it was a couple in their 70s, today another older couple and a wee boy completing the way much faster than me…maybe I haven’t being trying hard enough…I certainly feel humbled.
