28.8 km (158.72 km) – Saturday 9th July Well Joanne’s knee was worse this morning so she decided to rest it for the day. We walked to Malham for breakfast and then parted company; Joanne taking two buses to our hotel and me off back into the rain. Malham is a very pretty village and with Malham cove nearby really worth visiting (It appears in one of the Harry Potter films, apparently). Today however Joanne didn’t miss much as visibility was about 5m. I spent most of the day on my own ( grumbling to myself about soggy feet!) but bumped into Adrian and Andy, who have been on the same schedule as us for the past 6 days towards the end of the day. Late on in the day we climbed Pen-y-ghent; the highest most rugged peak so far. I’ll have to come back because I have the feeling on a clear day the views would be amazing. Not today but that didn’t stop everyone we met laughing about the terrible weather and still having a great day out. I couldn’t book any accommodation in Horton in Ribblesdale and after many phone calls finally found an inn in Clapham, some ten miles away. I had been concerned that it was too far away and maybe a bit too ‘respectable’ for us in our walking, muddy gear but it is perfect…even although our lovely room has washing hanging everywhere 😳. I think I have another day on my own tomorrow, I missed Joanne today but we are hoping that if she has another day off tomorrow she’ll be fighting fit on Monday, here’s hoping.
