Monday 4th July – 29km
We arrived yesterday evening and after a quick kit check bid farewell to Imogen (Joanne’s daughter) before heading to bed for an early night. This morning we awoke to sun streaming in through our windows and cloudless blue skies, most unexpected. We left The Ramblers Inn early and headed off for the start point a few 100 metres up the road at The Old Nags Head in Edale; a picturesque little village. The weather was perfect and scenery varied and stunning for the first part of the day. There was one main steep section, Jacob’s ladder – so called because a trader called Jacob found a quicker way up the Pennine route at this point during the period when the way was an important trade route for wool and salt – the ponies would zig zag up and Jacob just headed straight up the steeper more direct route, and so did we. The latter part of the walk was supposed to be bleak and boggy but as the weather remained good, and as it is day one, nothing appeared too bleak to us, we had views and we thought we might be walking in waterproofs for 19 days so we were thankful for blue skies. We arrived at The Old House, our B & B for the night, and were transported to the local pub in Glossop for dinner. We were slightly concerned that we might not get a lift back because a fellow walker was going on about Remain and Leave and our lift was an opinionated leave voter; he heard my accent and said he wished the Scots would get lost, my cries of ‘better together’ and ‘delighted to be united’ falling on deaf ears. Luckily he did come back but did spend the return journey telling us why he voted Leave. Each to their own vote, but we happy to be transported back to our beds for the night!
