Day 2: Torside to Standedge

Pennine Way

27km (46km) – Tuesday 5th July

We started the second day with scant regard to the map or guide book, but in intense conversation with Kevin from Melbourne. We missed the first turn and added an annoying extra 1km to the day’s total. A teacher accompanying DofE walkers told us where we should be going, after the fact.

We were quickly dumped by Kevin, who we realised was only sticking with us until he was sure of the path, as he didn’t have any navigation aids with him.

After a beautiful morning’s walk, we crossed another busy road, the A62, catching a tantalising glimpse of a snack van as it pulled away from the layby, just as we slogged up the hill. (Low point). In the afternoon we passed loads of reservoirs and a few couples we’d also encountered yesterday. I’m dying to question them more closely, but Pauline hurries me on whenever we leap frog them again. A 70 year old Canadian man we met yesterday was walking from Lands End to John O Groats, but most other people we’ve met are just walking for a few days or a week.

We had dinner in the Diggle Hotel: tasty chicken burger, merlot which was disappointingly weak and very un-wine like, but a strong finish with a glass of Balvenie. Heading to Hebden Bridge (Happy Valley) tomorrow 😊
