Day 2 Alpriate to Vila Franca-de-Xira

Camino Portugués

Tuesday 29th March

19km (42km)

Busy roads and a lot of mud

After a night of persistent, torrential rain we awoke expecting a soggy start to the day but were pleasantly surprised that we managed the entire day poncho free, albeit a little muddy under foot! The day was rather unremarkable with much of the route hugging, or indeed right on, the busy N10. We passed through muddy fields giving way to industrial areas, villages and towns before being pleasantly surprised by a dry and comfortable-under-foot new walkway; a combination of both gravel and boardwalk. This meandered alongside a river tributary and was all very lovely until we reached Aleverca and were forced onto the busy N10.

Beautiful town

The road wound through the usual grit of the suburbs before a beautiful little town appeared; a collection of white-washed and brightly painted buildings on a perfect riverside setting. We decided to stop for a quick bite to eat but when a basket of amuse bouches was brought to our table for us to sample as we perused the menu we decided it was time for a swift exit – no bocadillo con queso here!

Beautiful boardwalk

We walked the last 4km on a delightful riverside path, made of a spongy substance which is just the thing for tired feet in boots, complete with water fonts and tasteful murals.

Vila Franca-de-Xira

We are now staying in an Albergue in Vila Franca-de-Xira. A colourful town that prides itself in its bullfighting. It is known for breeding fighting bulls – no doubt a lesser-known fact so now you know. We are just about to head out for menu del dia before the usual lights out at 8 pm.

I shouldn’t say this but I have no blisters yet 💃
