Day 19: Gijón to Avilés

Camino del Norte

I left the lovely hotel this morning around 6am and was surrounded by late night revellers staggering around the streets. The partying to celebrate the start of summer meant that many cafes were open this morning to accommodate them, so for once I had my cafe con leche and croissant :).
There was no one around as I left Gijón, I presumed that the majority of the ‘pilgrims’ had taken the bus as the guide book promised that this stage was the least enjoyable of the Camino Del Norte (I’m sure that was supposed to be another day, earlier on!). On departing from Gijón the route does go through a very extensive and ugly industrial district but the lack of way marks meant the early part of the day was taken up with making sure I didn’t get lost, and watching out for a young Italian girl (Alessia) who kept going the wrong way. The remaining part of the walk was mostly on a busy highway, which was highly unpleasant, followed by a long walk beside wedged in between rail tracks and more old industrial buildings. I was glad to see the Albergue, which is well run, clean and near lots of restaurants. I had my ‘menu Del dia’ and then headed back to tumble my washing, at around 6:30pm…I woke up at 5am so am very well rested for the day ahead.
