After a terrible night with some of the worst electric storms I have ever seen/heard we were up around 5am, eating stale bread, waiting for the sun to rise so we could leave behind the revolting Albergue. It was free, I reckon this was a fare price for what was on offer, mind you at least we had shelter from the storm. The storm should have cleared the air but it wremained extremely humid, which I’ve decided is the worst type of weather for my blister prone toes, much whining today about my sad looking feet 😢. At about 12k I had a coffee stop in Liando; a pretty little village very much bustling with life – quite often the places along the route are like ghost towns with the odd resident regarding all pilgrims with suspicion as they march by. As I was sitting there one of the men from the Albergue the night before walked past (he is 80 years old and still doing Caminos), as he passed by a table of Spanish locals they all shouted his name and informed me the he was Fabrizio from Italy who had completed 21 marathons and many Caminos, apparently he’s a well known character on the Caminos…
The walk today was lovely, although the cloud level stayed low keeping photo opportunities to a minimum. The final part of the day took a route through the large holiday town of Laredo; a large sprawling community with an impressive beach which we walked along for 6km. At the peninsula’s end I took a small ferry to Santoña, my final destination today. Santoña is noisy, in a good family holiday kind of way, it has an attractive atmosphere of faded grandeur about it with many old, painted buildings, small streets and many squares with plenty of restaurants and bars. The Albergue is perfect and I’m actually in a room with only three others, and all women so hopefully less snoring tonight.
